This antique Russian Orthodox icon depicts the Mother of God of the Burning Bush, one of the most symbolically rich Marian images in Orthodox iconography. Painted in Russia during the nineteenth century, the icon was created using traditional materials and techniques, with egg tempera applied over gesso on a wooden panel.
The Mother of God and the Christ Child appear at the center of an eight-pointed star formed by two overlapping quadrangles. The red section symbolizes the divine fire surrounding the Burning Bush, while the dark green section represents the natural color of the bush that burned without being consumed. Surrounding the central image are angels and archangels, including Michael, Raphael, Uriel, Selaphiel, and Barachiel.
Gold leaf remains throughout the background, giving the composition a luminous and richly decorative appearance. The icon is in good overall antique condition, with expected age-related wear, including light surface scuffs, a chip along the lower margin, wear to the corners, and damage along the bottom edge of the wooden panel.
