Kazanskaya Mother of God

This is an antique Russian icon of the Kazanskaya Mother of God. The gilt silver oklad is chased with foliage, inset silver filigree robes, and a headdress beaded with pearls, decorated with jeweled star. Marks on the oklad include the hallmark for the city of Yaroslavl, the date 1796 and makers mark “P.A.” for Rodin Artem’yev (this would be one of his last works). This icon is in excellent condition for its age with some pearls missing on the fragile cloth halo. The icon measures 10” wide and 12” tall.

The icon of the Kazan Virgin is celebrated on July 8th and October 22nd, the icon made its appearance in 1579. The term “apparition of an icon” means in the old Russian Chronicles a miraculous event by which an icon hitherto unknown becomes notable as a new source of the manifestation of grace. The icon of the Kazan Virgin became notable through several miracles; it accompanied the troops who liberated Moscow from the Poles on October 22nd 1612. Along with the icon of the Mother of God of Smolensk, it gave courage to the Russian army during the 1812 war with Napoleon. The Kazan icon played a very substantial role in the destiny of the Russian state. Icons of the Kazan Virgin are most revered and widespread in Russia.
