An antique icon of “Saint Nicholas the Miracle Worker” produced in Russia circa the second-half of the nineteenth century. This is an uncommon icon showing Saint Nicholas standing in the center holding a white church perched on a rock in his left hand, and a stick in his right hand that has an orb at the top containing an image of Christ the Teacher. Another orb floats to the side of Nicholas’ head and contains an image of Blessed Mary the Mother of God. There are four miniature scenes in the lower portion of the icon showing events from Nicholas’ life including his birth (bottom left) and baptism (bottom right). The icon was hand painted and constructed in the traditional manner with egg tempera on gesso over a wood panel. The two supporting slats on the back of the panel are intact. Gold leaf remains throughout the background. There is some chipping to the painting’s surface, particularly surrounding Nicholas’ head indicating that the icon may have once had a metal cover over it that rubbed against the surface of the wood panel. This icon measures approximately 8.25” wide and 10.25” tall.
