Life of St. Nicholas | Russian Icon

Antique Russian icon depicting scenes from the life of St. Nicholas. From the Mstiora School. Superb condition after minor restoration. Made in Russia circa early 19th century. This icon is 17" wide and 21" tall. Hand painted and constructed in the traditional manner with egg tempera on gesso over wood. Fine detail in 16 scenes surround a central figure of Saint Nicholas with gold leaf ground. Fine miniaturized detail in each of 16 complex scenes surrounding a central figure of Saint Nicholas set against a gold leaf background. This is a very fine painting with a multitude of figures in rich, vibrant colors. The recessed panel is surrounded by a border containing descriptive titles of each scene in old Cyrillic.
