Product Overview
This traditional Russian Orthodox icon depicts the Mother of God of Częstochowa, also known as the Black Madonna, in a distinctive Russian interpretation associated with the title “Softening of Evil Hearts.” The crowned Virgin Mary holds the crowned Christ Child, who carries the Gospel Book and raises His right hand in blessing. The composition follows the Hodegetria tradition—“She Who Shows the Way”—presenting Christ as the source of salvation.
At the center are symbolic medallions depicting the dove of the Holy Spirit and the instruments of Christ’s Passion at Golgotha. Below the figures is a stylized fortified wall with a central gate, a feature found in Russian adaptations of the Częstochowa image. Richly patterned garments, gold-toned halos, and a warm palette of red, ochre, brown, and gold give the composition a solemn and highly decorative appearance.
The border saints include the Holy Guardian Angel and Saint Eudokia on the left, and the Holy Martyr Julitta with her young son, Saint Cyricus, on the right. Such saints were often selected as personal or family patrons, adding an intimate devotional meaning to the icon.
The icon is fitted with a finely repoussé silver-plated metal riza (oklad), which frames the sacred figures while leaving the painted faces and hands visible. The riza enhances both the devotional character and the visual richness of the icon and remains in good antique condition with age-appropriate wear.
