Description

An antique Russian icon of the Mother of God—“Our Lady of Iversk.” This icon has multicolored painted ornamentation in the background and border with a pattern tooled into the wood panel. The icon was hand painted and constructed in the traditional manner with egg tempera on gesso over wood. Gold leaf remains throughout the background. There is some chipping of the faces, hands, and feet only, suggesting this icon once had a riza (cover) over the remaining portion of the icon. Narrow top and bottom slats are intact on the back. This icon has certificate #342335 from the U.S.S.R. Ministry of Culture certifying age and authenticity. Certified to be over 100 years old as of January 8, 1979. Circa mid nineteenth century. The icon measures approximately 12.25” x 10.5”. Antique condition with expected wear consistent with age. Paint loss primarily on the faces, hands, and feet. Gold leaf remains throughout the background.
