Description

This lovely Fedoskino miniature painting is a scene from the Russian fairy tale of the "Frog Princess" - Vasilisa. The arrow to the right landed next to its unintended target. In the quest for a bride, Ivan Tsarevich fired his arrow at random in the hopes of securing beauty and love along with his two older brothers. He did not count on adventure. The frog finding has just transformed into anything but a slippery amphibian. Ivan will realize the true nature of his find soon enough.
This composition is based on a box originally painted by Fedoskino master Gennady Larishev.  Sladkova is the talented artist that composed this colorful presentation.
The clothing worn by the character is definitely one of the highlights of the piece. A forest green, dark yellow-gold, maroon and sky blue are the chosen stars of the palette. They are thoroughly intensified by aluminum powder. The floppy frog skin is an excellent piece of animation by way of the brush. The black lacquer exterior, also acting as the background for the character, builds beauty in the palette in large doses.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the box while bright red lacquer completes the interior of the piece. The box has a hinge to the left of the composition and rests on four legs. The hinged box is approximately 6.25" x 4.75" x 2".
