Robert and his wife Linda live in Kenai Alaska and have been producing their one-of-a-kind art works for over 40 years. Linda is a gifted jewelry-maker in her own right; but Robert has risen to the top of his craft, creating exquisitely constructed bowls out of materials native to his Alaska homeland plus exotic hardwoods from around the world. At par with and included in any discussion of the top bowl turners in America, a Cutler bowl is truly a masterpiece of the art form.
Roberts works are not only featured in museums and major collections of woodworking, he also has two pieces selected to be included in the permanent Smithsonian collection of American woodworkers, and another fine bowl in the permanent White House collection.
His proprietary techniques and knowledge of materials, plus his artistic eye and skills in construction, are the envy of any bowl-turner who sees his work. Creating perhaps under two dozen unique one-of-a-kind works of art per year, Robert Cutler is no doubt not only at the top of the Alaska woodworking class, but simply in the front row with the best in America and the world.
To own a Cutler bowl is owning a piece of perfection, but also a piece of Alaska as well, as he uses many native Alaska materials such as birch wood, Alaskan willow, fossil ivory, and moose antler. A single work can have upwards of a thousand component parts, various hardwood, bone, antler, fossil ivory, gold, silver, bronze etc. all painstakingly constructed into a whole that will delight and amaze.
We have represented the Cutler family and Cutler bowls for over 25 years, and they continue to be the premier artists in our gallery at the Russian American Company in Sitka Alaska.
