Kholui is a tempera painting village with traditions rooted in old icon painting schools, which were persecuted during the revolution. Having preserved the ancient ways of painting with fairy-tales, Kholui is one of three tempera workshops still currently functioning. This is one of the most popular Russian scenes, representing winter fun, youthful attitude, and happy holidays . The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior of the piece while red lacquer completes the interior of the work. The lid is hinged to the top of the composition, and the box rests on the four legs. Signed with the artist's name,title and Kholui.
