Description

Palekh is a tempera painting village with traditions rooted in old icon painting schools. Having preserved the ancient ways of painting with fairy-tales, Palekh is one of three tempera workshops still currently functioning. The troika is a long-loved symbol in Russia. Gold is used to decorate the exterior of the box. The artist's precision and ability to paint minute decoration is illustrated in the filigree that frames the scene and the filigree that wraps around the sides of the box.
The box is constructed out of paper-mache. Black lacquer is used to paint the exterior and red lacquer is used to paint the interior of the box. The box is unhinged and rests flat. The box is signed with Palekh and the name of the artist.
