Product Overview
Talented Ivan Kovalev of Kholui is the artist who painted this traditional composition. Kovalev is a well-known artist whose style is enhanced by the ultra-thin brushwork he manages to render. There are only a few artists who have the ability to make the smallest strokes of paint come to life.
The box shows traditional themes from Russian real life in the 19th Century. Here we can see a winter troika (three horses sleigh) speeding through the Russian countryside. A loving couple hides from the snowstorm in the sleigh while a driver encourages the horses.
The composition is painted in the unique Kovalev's style. Gold paint is used to enhance the already intricate detailing and bring out the true power of the palette. Here the artist has managed to find a place for complex medieval architecture and detailed landscape that proves his talent as a skilled lacquer miniature painter!
Golden floral ornament frames around the lid's artistry. The box sides are decorated with intricate and complex gold and silver floral ornamentation.
The box is made out of paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. A hinge has been fastened to the top of the composition, and the box rests on four legs. The artist has written the title, Kholui and his name at the bottom of the composition.
