Dog Sled With Team of Seven Dogs
Mary Seppilu, Yupik carver from St. Lawrence Island, created this imaginatively carved musher and his team of seven dogs on top of this magnificent walrus ivory tusk. Mary carved each dog from a unique piece of fossil ivory adding individual personality and whimsy to every one. Carved walrus teeth hang from baleen rails on either side.
Some of the materials she is using, raw walrus Ivory and Baleen, are restricted for use by the Federal Government for two subsistence living tribes, The Yupik and Inupiat.
Mary has done limited amount of carving since her husband David Seppilu passed away in 2008. This piece is a wonderful example of Mary’s work and would make a fine addition to any Northern Alaska art collection.
