Consolation of All the Afflicted (joy to All Who sorrows), with Coins. During a Thuderstorm in July 1888, lightening hit the chapel in St.Petersburg, casing a fire. The Icon of Mother of God “Consolation of All the Afflicted” fell to the floor and to its paintwork stuck a dozen copper coins scattered from a broken poor box. Icons of this type are decorated with coins, either painted or real ones that are fit into the surface of the icon panel. This icon is painted in Russia in egg tempera on wood, c. late 1890, covered with silver riza.
