This lacquer miniature was painted by Smirnova from Palekh village. St. George is best known for being the patron saint of Russia. He is also the symbolic figure of Moscow and its strength as the Russian capital. He is most famous for the miracle involving him fighting a dragon. Gold is used to outline and highlight much of the composition.The scene is framed with a gold line. Miniature painted on the Mother-of-pearl background.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. Black lacquer covers the exterior and red lacquer covers the interior of the box. A hinge is fastened from the left of the composition, and the box rests flat. The work is signed by the artist. Approx. 5"x3"x1.5".
