Snow Maiden and Grandfather Frost | Fedoskino Lacquer Box

This beautiful box was painted by Boris Shavyrin.
The box shows major characters from popular fairy-tale "Snowmaiden" or "Snegurochka".
The scene painted on the box's lid depicts Grand Father Frost and his granddaughter Snowmaiden in a winter forest.
The palette incorporates gray and white oils as the action takes place in winter, with addition of gold paints to give a feeling of magic and splendor. The effect of festivity is strengthened by the pieces of mother-of-pear inlaid into the costumes of both character. The branches of trees covered with white fluffy snow, that are also expressively painted.
Rich gold line frames the composition.The box's sides imitates the color of blue marble; the bottom is black, while the interior of the box is traditionally red.
The box is constructed from paper-mache. The box has a hinge to the left from the scene and rests on a flat base. It is signed with the artist's name.
