Product Description

This "Small Bear" plaque carved by George Matilpi. George Matilpi was born in Aleut Bay, B.C., and is a member of the Carrier Nation. At age 45, he has been carving for about twenty years. Taught by Amos Dawson, Chief of the Carrier Nation, George Matilpi carves exceptional and traditional Kwakiutl wood plaques. He employs the traditional black, red, and turquoise color scheme on unstained cedar wood. Within this traditional framework, Matilpi creates innovative and charismatic animal plaques with personality.
In addition to practicing his art, Matilpi is helping to insure its continuation by teaching young carvers in Vancouver, B.C. and Seattle. The plaque is approx. 5" wide and 9" tall. Signed by the artist.
