Palekh is a tempera painting village with traditions rooted in old icon painting schools, which were persecuted during the revolution. Having preserved the ancient ways of painting with fairy-tales, Palekh is one of three tempera workshops still currently functioning. This box shows us scene from the Russian fairy tail "Emelya and Magic Pike". The artist uses silver and gold paints to decorate the box with scrollwork. The lid is hinged from the top of the scene, and the box rests on four round legs. The work is signed with the artist's name, the title, and the village of Kholui on the box's exterior bottom.
Approx size 3"x2.75"x 1.75".
