Hamatsa Society Raven Mask

  • The Hamatsa society is the highest ranking Kwakiutl secret society. The Hamatsa dancers represent a cannibal spirit who lives in the sky (Bakbakwalanooksiwae). During initiation rites into the society the figure of the Hamatsa Raven plays a central role in the dance and is reserved for a senior member of the society.

Product Description

This large Raven mask is by Kwakiutl artist Michell Folley and was carved from yellow cedar. The mask measures approximately 45" long. This form of Raven mask represents one of the three supernatural birds that serve as attendants to the "Cannibal at the North End of the World. This mask is used in the Hamatsa (Cannibal Dance).
