An antique Russian icon painting of the Moscow School. Hand painted and constructed in the traditional manner with egg tempera on gesso over wood. Made in Russia circa early 18th century. This icon measures 12.5" wide and 14" tall. The primary figure of Christ holding a Gospel represents Christ the Ruler of All (Pantocrator). Secondary figures of Saint Alexis, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Mary of Egypt, and an Angel stand in the right and left margins of the border. Remnants of gold leaf remain on Christa's halo. The recessed center with wider double slats at back is consistent with period construction.
