An antique Russian lacquer egg box painted with a scene of Christ ascending to Heaven on one side and an architectural painting on the other side. The egg was produced in the Vishnyakov workshop circa 1865. Approximately 2.5" x 1.75". The egg has a red lacquer exterior and a dark brown interior. Made from papier mache and lacquer and painted with oil based paints. The painting is illuminated with a ground of metal powder. Maker's marks are under the lid as a double side seal. One side shows a profile of Tsar Alexander II and the other is the mark for the O.F. Vishnyakov and Sons Workshop (1865-1870s).
